Clarke’s batting woes continue ahead of third Ashes Test

Mitchell Marsh, Shaun’s younger brother, made a fifty as did fellow all-rounder Shane Watson (61).

Shaun Marsh is in the box seat to replace Chris Rogers, whether it be for the third Ashes Test or after the series, the West Australian scoring his second ton of Australia’s tour of England as the tourists piled on the runs on the opening day of their tour game against Derbyshire.

The skipper, who has scored two centuries in his past 26 test innings, struggled to get going in the Ashes tour game.

Davis’ maiden wicket was that of Clarke, while the teenager also snared Adam Voges and wicketkeeper Peter Nevill en route to figures of three for 63 as Australia closed on 413 for nine. “A big one is just around the corner for “Pup”.

Rogers’s place at Edgbaston has been called into question after he suffered a dizzy spell on the final day of Australia’s 405-run win over England at Lord’s on Sunday that levelled the five-match Ashes series at 1-1.

Warner was rarely troubled after Clarke won the toss. Clarke wore a helmet with the neck guard that had helped prevent Rogers from suffering a heavier blow from Anderson, and looked intent on a longer stay than he had managed in either of the first two Tests.

If the second-Test centurion is unable to play in Birmingham, Marsh, as he did during Rogers’ concussion-related absence in the Caribbean, will be the opener.

Shaun Marsh is ready to step into Chris Rogers’ opening position.

But, after receiving some on-field attention, Warner batted on and shortly before lunch lofted off-spinner Scott Elstone for six. He reached his hundred with a cover drive for four off Jonathan Clare and then retired out, having faced 108 balls including 13 fours and a six.

It was his second hundred in as many matches following his 114 against Kent.

“I’m just focusing on being ready if an opportunity comes up, that’s been my sole focus in the last couple of weeks”, he told Sky Sports News.

Australia were playing both their wicket-keepers in this match after Peter Nevill impressed on his debut at Lord s – a match first-choice gloveman Brad Haddin missed for “family reasons”.

Both players are set to share wicket-keeping duties in this match ahead of the third Test, which starts on July 29.

Nevill gave Davis his third wicket when a square cut was caught at cover-point.

Haddin received treatment from physio Alex Kountouris for what looked to be cramp, but recovered to score 32 before his stumps were rattled by Tony Palladino.

Peter Siddle, Fawad Ahmed and Pat Cummins will all be aiming to make an impact with the ball on day two after Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon were given a rest.
