Classes canceled Tuesday at Delta State University after professor killed

The Delta State University instructor was also the sole suspect in the killing of Delta history professor Dr. Ethan Schmidt, who was shot dead in his office Monday morning.

Gautier police said late Monday afternoon they had been in contact with Lamb and he had vowed he would “not go to jail”.

A detective played the 911 recording for reporters on Tuesday.

In the call, Lamb tells a dispatcher that police need to send officers over to his home on Santa Cruz Street in Gautier.

He also mentioned there was a dog in the house. About two hours or so after the initial lockdown, about 25 heavily armed police officers swept through the building, Abraham said.

Lamb called police after Prentiss died, taking responsibility for the slaying in a 911 call shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, telling the operator: “I shot my wife last night”. He pulled down a driveway north of Greenville, near his parents’ home and ran into the woods.

The note did not reveal any further indications about what Lamb’s motive was or whether or not he had planned on hurting anyone else. A love triangle is believed to be what pushed Lamb to instigate the shooting.

“We have nothing to support that”.

“Our hearts, our hands and our prayers go out to Ethan’s family”.

“We do believe Lamb committed the homicide in Gautier and he later drove to Delta State and committed that homicide there”.

At the same time, there were some inclinations of problems.

“It was supposedly that he was bitten by a spider or something”, Bingham confirmed. He instead instructed authorities to “take care of her [Prentiss]”.

“It was like that class you look forward to”, Beavers said.

The manhunt for Lamb had led his Facebook friends to post pleas that he turn himself in.

“He helped me as a freshman get a 4.0”, DSU student Julianne Morgan said.

This year, he was only teaching two online classes, and recent changes in the university’s hiring policies meant the doctorate Lamb had worked so hard to earn would not guarantee him an automatic tenure track.

While law enforcement officials are certain Lamb murdered both Prentiss and Schmidt, what they don’t know is why. O’Steen said they divorced 15 years ago but remained friends and had a daughter who’s now 19. “To this day, I’ll always see him as an older brother”.

Lamb taught at Delta State with Schmidt.

A search of Lamb’s home turned up a written apology, police said Tuesday.

“They were great”, he said of the couple.

“He was on his road to being one of the great scholars of American history”, she said.

“I value the fact that inquiry for the sake of inquiry is honored in the profession”, he wrote. We don’t have answers yet.
