According to the Gautier police, shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, Lamb “called the Gautier Police Department and stated that he shot and killed his wife…”

Police: “You said it’s 2320 Santa Cruz?”

“You think about your child, but you also think about all of his friends, the kids from Winston County that are there, and the football team he’s associated with, and then all of the other kids we know at Delta State”, Sullivan said.

He became conscious of his bloated cheek, withdrew from work earlier this summer and failed to attend scheduled classes at Delta State University.

Schmidt had written several books and scholarly papers and had expertise in Native American history.

Detective Matt Hoggatt, one of the investigating officers, said there was no indication that drugs, alcohol or domestic violence played a part and there is no suggestion that Mr Schmidt and Ms Prentiss had a romantic relationship.

At the campus of 3,500 students, the police blockades had been taken down, people were out cutting the grass and traffic moved normally, although there was not a lot of pedestrian traffic.

Lamb said in the 911 call that he was not going to identify himself, but before he hung up, he told them Prentiss’ name.

He also received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Delta State. “Take care of her”, he said. “She and her mother were absolutely best friends”, O’Steen said.

LaForge says he didn’t know of any conflict between Lamb and Schmidt but “obviously there was something in Mr. Lamb’s mind”. “I thought the world of him”.

“It was probably the scariest thing I have been through in a while”, said a student who had Schmidt as a professor.

“He’s a sweet dog”, the man said.

Classes at Delta State were canceled Monday and Tuesday, and a celebration of the campus’s 90th anniversary scheduled for Tuesday was postponed as the community mourned.

According to the New York Times, when Lamb was pulled over, he “was only about 35 miles to the west of the [Delta State] campus”.

But a police official said Shannon Lamb, a social science and geography instructor at Delta State University, gave no motive for the killings that prompted a tense manhunt on Monday before he shot himself as he was cornered by authorities. She said he was whip smart and would often quote song lyrics in conversation.
