Matthews, who had been out a week with knee soreness, said everything went smoothly and he finished no worse for wear.

Matthews, however, wouldn’t say whether he will be cleared to play Thursday.

“Probably just start easing me back into it”, Matthews said afterward. “There’s always other factors that go along with that”.

With Matthews being trained since the start of the offseason to play a considerable role at inside linebacker as well as his natural spot on the outside for rushing the passer, the Packers are having a hard time finding a sufficient corps of outside linebackers in practice. Tom Silverstein is in his 25th year covering the Green Bay Packers and 30th year with the Journal Sentinel.

“You know what, any opportunity to be out there, especially in regards to preseason games, I think is very important”, Matthews said. “No matter how the ball is thrown to me, it’s my job as a receiver to adjust and make the catch”.
