Clayton Kershaw’s hip still sore, slated for Friday start

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw has been scratched from his scheduled start against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday due to hip soreness. It wouldn’t get any easier, though, as Sonny Gray took the mound for the Oakland Athletics at Dodger stadium.

Kershaw is expected to start Friday in the Freeway Series opener against the Los Angeles Angels, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said during batting practice.

Josh Reddick homered, doubled and singled for the last-place A’s, who traded Ben Zobrist, Scott Kazmir and closer Tyler Clippard in the past six days, seemingly abandoning their playoff hopes after making three straight postseasons.

“It’s just a little sore”, Kershaw said. “We just got to keep that confidence in ourselves and believe in ourselves”.

The A’s and Dodgers meet again tonight in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in nine of his 10 home starts.WALK-OFFS1. The right-hander didn’t allow a runner to reach third base while improving to 8-1 with a 1.64 ERA on the road this season.

“He’s really, really, good”, Anderson said of Gray. “When the game starts, you have 25 guys out there, and you’re trying to win a baseball game”.

“We’re going to go out there, we’re going to compete and battle and try to win as many games as we can”. But Howie Kendrick, who had the Dodgers’ second hit in the seventh, singled with two outs in the ninth before Adrian Gonzalez flied out to end the A’s 13th shutout of the season, the most in the American League. He has thrown two shutouts in his past three starts with 38 strikeouts and no walks. He also leads the majors with 185 strikeouts.

Gray was locked in a pitcher’s duel with former teammate Brett Anderson, who faced the Athletics for the first time as an opposing pitcher.

“I’m glad I hit it on the barrel because my hands would have been ringing”, Gray said.

Burns would come around to score the game’s first run, moving to second when Marcus Semien walked taking third when Brett Lawrie grounded out and scoring on a Billy Butler slow chopper to third base.
