Clean water running out at Syrian refugee camp near closed Jordan border

Jordan has shut down its border with Syria temporarily after attack on Tuesday that killed six people.

The Jordanian military said those killed in Tuesday’s attack included four border troops, a member of the civil defense and a public security officer.

The military says a “booby-trapped vehicle attacked the berm, killing and wounding a number of border guards”.

The driver entered Jordanian territory through an opening used for humanitarian aid deliveries and blew himself up as he reached a military post, it added. In March 2016 Jordan reportedly agreed to admit up to 20,000 refugees stranded at the border crossings to Azraq refugee camp.

Jordan is a staunch ally of the United States and is taking part in the US -led campaign against Islamic State in Syria, where the jihadist group still controls large areas of territory including much of the east.

Ariane Rummery, a spokeswoman for the United Nations refugee agency in Geneva, said the attack “underlines how challenging the relief operation is at the berm”.

Jordan is a staunch ally of the United States and is taking part in the US-led campaign in Syria against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The military declared the remote desert regions that stretch northeast to Syria and east to Iraq “closed military zones”.

“Jordan has always warned from the increase in Syrians’ numbers at the borders, especially since it has amounted to 100,000 people, most of whom are from northern and northeastern Syria where Daesh members are located, ” said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

But government spokesman Mohamed Momani told AFP the measure would not affect “humanitarian cases” – a reference to refugees fleeing Syria’s five-year war.

In recent weeks, aid agencies had won Jordan’s agreement to set up more prefab trailers in the area to improve distribution and refugee registration.

“Those attacks are expected on Jordan and other countries”.

One of its pilots was captured by the jihadists when his plane went down in Syria in December 2014.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filipo Grandi also condemned Tuesday’s attack, the UNHCR said in a statement Wednesday.

Jordan says it is hosting almost 1.4 million Syrian refugees, of whom 630,000 are registered with the United Nations.
