Such is life this New Year’s Day for this team and the Sooner Nation. The 1981 team also accomplished the feat. Oklahoma battled adversity in many forms over the last 12 months. The Tigers took him out of the game at halftime, and Lawson still had an ice pack strapped to his knee during the postgame celebration.
“Talent doesn’t win the game”.
Alabama leads the all-time series 12-3, but the teams have played only once since 1975 – a 34-10 Tide win in the 2008 opener.
That wasn’t Clemson punter Andy Teasdall’s first pass or first completion.
It appeared the stars were aligning for an eighth national title run for Oklahoma. The bad blood started Wednesday when Clemson defensive lineman Shaq Lawson was jawing with the Oklahoma players when he boarded their team bus after a function.
Oklahoma fullback Dimitri Flowers (36) congratulates Oklahoma tight end Mark Andrews (81) after Andrews scored a touchdown during the first half of the Orange Bowl NCAA college football semifinal playoff game against Clemson, Th… “That’s two years in a row that he’s had fantastic interception in a bowl game”.
Clemson has won two games in the same stadium outside of Clemson, S.C., for the second time in history. He was also the Tigers’ QB two years before that here – when Clemson got throttled, 70-33, by West Virginia.
The Sooners were staying in the game with smoke and mirrors, not able to get the ground game moving after a fantastic yet fool’s-gold opening drive. never able to reach that place where they were humming and the Tigers were on their heels. He helped the Tigers rack up 530 yards, a number that doesn’t do justice to their offensive dominance because they sat on the ball for most of the fourth quarter while nursing a lead. Wayne Gallman rushed for 150 yards and a pair of TDs. The program is now 75-0-1 when achieving at least 200 yards in both categories in the same game.
Upon further review, Boston College played Clemson within 17 points and Syracuse played Clemson within 10 and SC played Clemson within five because the Tigers were having a hard time maintaining interest. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was obviously aware of that fact. Embattled coach Tommy Bowden resigned after six games, and Swinney who was in charge of receivers took over as the head coach. They played an excellent football game today and showed why they’re undefeated and the No. 1 team in the country.
Deshaun Watson was excellent.
How else could you explain the decision to not only run a fake punt early in the second quarter, with the Tigers already trailing 7-3, but to have your punter throw a pass…to your 300-pound defensive tackle. He had one passing touchdown and one rushing.
Deshaun Watson, who finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting, will be the best quarterback the Tide have faced this season. Tajh Boyd held the record with 127 versus Ohio State in the 2013 Orange Bowl. He passed Raymond Priester, who had 1,345 for the Tigers in 1996. Watson scrambled for 46 yards on the first play from scrimmage to get out to midfield. His defining pass of the night came with about four minutes remaining in the period, when he zipped a bullet to wide receiver Hunter Renfrow in such a high window that only Renfrow could snag it. Renfrow then spun away from a defender to complete a 35-yard score.
This season was a huge upgrade, but it ended with the same result in a dismal loss to Clemson at bowl time. It proved to the be the singular moment that will stand out most when this game is talked about 30 years from now, a defining, memorable play that will be relived over and over.
