Clemson holds on for ugly win over Troy

Brandon Silvers threw a pair of touchdown passes to Deondre Douglas over the final five minutes of the game around a Clemson field goal to pull Troy within six, 30-24, but an on-sides kick attempt with under a minute to play was unsuccessful. The problem was he needed to go 75 yards at Death Valley.

Silvers finished the game 24-of-42 for 233 yards, a pair of touchdowns and two interceptions.

Troy played two Quarterbacks in the first half, which they combined for 13/22 for 153 yards and 3 interceptions. They ran for a first down on the first snap and forced MI to punt after its first three plays. “I can tell you that much”, senior safety Tray Matthews said Sunday. “I am proud of all of our coaches and players”.

“I’m just really pleased with the effort and the overall execution, ” Venables said. “It’s very frustrating because we’re a rhythm offense, and we’re not making the routine plays”.

“We know what we have in that room and for whatever reason, we’re just not on the right page right now”, said Jeff Scott, who shares Clemson’s offensive coordinator title with Tony Elliott.

We have seen players do this before and it still boggles the mind. Watson has previously said that he wanted to become a better vocal leader and that is something that he was working on, but he also said that he is a guy that leads by example. He weaved his way through the Troy defense, evaded a few tackles and lost his shoe on his way to a clear path into the end zone. Blake Barnett got the nod in the opener against Southern California and completed 2 of 6 passes for 64 yards in this one. The play was ruled incomplete and was not reviewed.

Way back in 2008, DeSean Jackson, then with the Philadelphia Eagles, dropped the ball before crossing the line against the Dallas Cowboys. And the other play was a 74-yard punt return for Ray Ray McCloud, which should have been a touchdown if he didn’t let go of the football before he crossed the end zone.

Troy head coach Neal Brown gestures on the sideline during the first half on an NCAA college football game against Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, in Clemson, S.C. Lawson and Dodd were 1-2 nationally in tackles for loss. With Clemson up 17 points late in the fourth, the game was basically out of reach for Troy.

Troy’s Jabir Frye broke free on the Trojans’ ensuing possession, bouncing outside on a fourth-and-one play and racing 66 yards to tie the score at 10-10. The over is 4-0 in Tigers last 4 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game and is 4-0 in Tigers last 4 games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game while going 5-0 in Tigers last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game.
