The United States sweep was all the more remarkable given world record holder Kendra Harrison and 2008 Olympic champion Dawn Harper missed the Games after failing to make the cut at the US trials. It was a hard-fought win, and the Americans bounced back physically and emotionally to win the bronze just one day after Walsh Jennings suffered the first Olympic loss of her career.
“You really can’t take anything for granted out here”.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) Tianna Bartoletta kicked off her country’s whirlwind run of medals on the night.
“I think that it’s just very good to be a part of this whole black girl magic movement”, she said. “I mean the world record was run right after our trials”.
Rollins – who turns 25 on Thursday -had command of the race and won in attractive form and fashion. “My thing was not so much a bronze for myself but for the team”.
“We’re from all different states and universities”. It is the first time in Olympic history that the United States has swept the hurdles event.
Shortly after Bolt advanced to the final of the men’s 200-meter dash, Thompson won the race on the women’s side. Thompson won the women’s 100 meter sprint on Saturday.
For the pair of Atlantic Coast Conference alumnae, making the US team may have been the hardest part of their mission.
Harrison responded by running a world record 12.20 after the trials at a meet in London then she was watching Wednesday as those who beat her at the trials in Eugene came through with 1-2-3 at the Olympics. No woman has ever successfully defended their Olympic title in the event.
Castlin, whose father was shot dead in 2000 at the hotel he managed, later said she hoped to work to help victims of gun violence.
Luis Scola scored 15 points and Manu Ginobili had 14 for Argentina in what’s expected to the final time the remaining core members of its Golden Generation play together.
So while Rollins and Castlin have both had each others’ numbers over the years, they expected to be one another’s chief rivals in Rio. Bolt clipped De Grasse, 19.78 to 19.80.
“We actually came to this not as individuals but as a team and that’s how we got the job done”, Castlin said.

“I knew it was going to take a lot of discipline”, Ali said on NBC. USA sprinter Justin Gatlin who had been the fastest over 200 meters so far this year, failed to qualify for the final. LaShawn Merritt will be the lone American in the race.
