Clemson-SC State football game shortened after 45-0 start

Clemson scored a touchdown in a most-bizarre fashion on Saturday against South Carolina State. That’s a fumble! Clemson’s Denzel Johnson pounced on the ball for the touchdown.

The Clemson Tigers (3-0) got off to a hot start on a warm day and did not let up, handing in-state foe South Carolina State (0-3) its third straight loss by a final of 59-0. NCAA rules allow coaches to agree to shorter clocks but not a running clock because of television timeouts, the Post and Courier says.

The Tigers put points on the board on nine of their first 10 drives, failing to score only when Greg Huegel’s second-quarter field goal was blocked.

“This is a football team like most football teams out there, they’ve got some dudes”, Swinney said. And that’s being modest saying that about how they got destroyed by the No. 5 Tigers.

Watson and McCloud also connected on a 36-yard scoring pass. Watson threw a 17-yard TD to Deon Cain in the second quarter before heading to the sideline. Harris caught the ball and tossed it toward the official before taking a knee.

Freshman Tavien Feaster led the Tigers in rushing with 12 attempts for 83 yards and a touchdown while Ray Ray McCloud had four catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers have already been preparing for the Yellow Jackets- who defeated Vanderbilt easily on Saturday- and will look to finish their game planning for the match-up on Thursday.

“Always talk about Buddy Pough, one of my favorite people”, Swinney said. “Hopefully, we can regroup and get ourselves ready to play in our league”.

The win came five days after Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson apologized to the fans, his teammates and the media for an attitude that he believed led to offensive struggles. The Clemson-Louisville debate should be settled at Death Valley in two weeks when Louisville plays here on October 1.

South Carolina St: Bulldogs open MEAC play, and face their first non-FBS opponent, at Florida A&M on Saturday. Clemson has lost its past five games in Atlanta with its last victory at Georgia Tech coming in 2003.
