The Browns are such a colossal, chaotic mess, so directionless, so without a core of talent, that finding a coach willing to take over this team – finding a good one, I should say – is far, far beyond Haslam’s scope. Pettine had two years left on his contract, but Haslam and his wife, Dee, aren’t happy with the direction of their franchise. Whether a Pettine intermediary had the conversation with the owner is not known.
On top of that, Manziel was spotted in Las Vegas on Saturday.
He spent 73 days in a rehab facility during the off-season, got benched by Pettine for two games during the year for misbehaviour and missed Sunday’s game with a concussion.
Browns vice president of communications Peter John-Baptiste would not confirm for USA TODAY if Manziel was in Cleveland. “I wasn’t”, but later added that if the rumors were true, “it would be disappointing”.
Because Manziel has been diagnosed with a concussion, he does not have to attend the game, Cleveland.com reported. But if the Browns do have any hope of maxing out Manziel’s ability, Gase’s talented offensive mind would come in handy. Manziel, 23, has been videotaped drinking, including on Christmas Eve.
Despite working together over the last two seasons, Pettine was not Farmer’s choice as head coach.
