Clinton after ‘Hamilton’: ‘Let’s not throw away our shot’

Jennifer Lopez and Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda shared the stage on Today this morning (July 11) for a performance of “Love Make the World Go Round”. He shed the Hamilton hair, and Jennifer Lopez was there to witness it. Miranda and Lopez have been collaborating on a new song dedicated to the victims of the Orlando shooting. Proceeds from the track will benefit the Hispanic Federation’s Proyecto Somos Orlando, which is assisting victims’ families.

Monday marked the second day of Miranda’s post-“Hamilton” career.

“I cry every time”, she said, after embracing the show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who left his role as the title character over the weekend but returned Tuesday to introduce her.

Clinton’s praise of “Hamilton” also could be taken as criticism of Trump, as she noted that the show “reminds us of how many millions of immigrants’ stories deserve to be told”.

The acclaimed performer – who appeared in the show since its off-Broadway debut in 2015 – cast the election as one between the person “who is acting on your fears or acting on your hopes”.

“Our Founders were not flawless people, but they were united in their conviction that they could build this new country from nothing”, she said, “and with all the fits and the starts that we have endured over the course of our history, we are still going strong”.

Lopez said she had written the song eight months ago, but after the Orlando Shooting, which killed 49 people, she realized the song, about the power of love, was needed now.

Miranda isn’t the only one who bid goodbye to “Hamilton”, as Odom Jr. and Soo also held their final bows last Saturday, July 9. “I was like, ‘The world needs this right now”. “We sing out, we got the rhythm and the true on our side”.

“I’m going there tonight”, he says, joking that the show is his “baby”.
