North Carolina Republican Party spokeswoman Kami Mueller said the NCAA decision was “so absurd it’s nearly comical”, according to a statement posted on Twitter.
This is not the first time the NCAA has taken a stance regarding the civil rights climate in a particular state.
The law requires transgender people to use restrooms at schools and government buildings corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates.
Republican Governor Pat McCrory has yet to respond, but a spokeswoman for the state Republican Party called the decision “so absurd it’s nearly comical”. Spokesperson Kami Mueller said in a statement, ‘This is so absurd it’s nearly comical.
“Under the NCAA’s logic, colleges should end all women’s sports and merge them with the men’s teams, should make cheerleaders and football players share bathrooms, showers and hotel rooms”, Woodhouse continued.
On Monday night, the Cooper Campaign responded to reports that the NCAA is relocating seven championship events from North Carolina, including the first and second rounds of the 2017 NCAA tournament, as a result of HB 2.
In addition to basketball, the decision also affects football, lacrosse, tennis and baseball, and golf.
North Carolina is losing the NCAA tournament.
Athletic directors at three of the state’s ACC schools – North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham, North Carolina State’s Debbie Yow and Wake Forest’s Ron Wellman – issued statements saying they were disappointed at the loss of events. “Pulling all championships had to be a hard decision”.
“Our position has been clear on this matter, which is that this legislation is discriminatory, troubling and embarrassing”, White said.
McCrory has consistently defended the bill as ‘common sense’, despite facing tremendous backlash.
“It seems that nearly every day, we learn of a new effect of HB2”, spokesman Ford Porter said.
Explaining the NCAA decision, its President Mark Emmert said in a statement, ‘Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships.
Based on an April directive from the Board of Governors, which represents all three divisions, cities interested in hosting future NCAA championships completed a questionnaire this summer that required sites to provide information about any local anti-discrimination laws; provisions for refusal of services; and other facility-specific information. The agency also noted that five states have passed measures in opposition to North Carolina’s laws that prohibit public employees ― which could include coaches and athletes at some universities ― from traveling to the state. Current North Carolina state laws make it challenging to guarantee that host communities can help deliver on that commitment if NCAA events remained in the state, the board said.
