Kaine’s nomination comes at a time when the party is seeking unity after allegations of corruption in the primary voting led to the resignation of DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. He served as Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011.

Kaine’s back-story covers some shortcomings on the Clinton ticket and, coming from a battleground state – since 2000, the candidate who has won Virginia has won the White House – he gives the former USA secretary of state a push in the race to the required 270 electoral college votes.

Outside the convention hall, several hundred marched down Philadelphia’s sweltering streets with signs carrying messages such as “Never Hillary”. The correspondence, posted by WikiLeaks over the weekend, showed top officials at the supposedly neutral DNC favoring Clinton over Sanders in the presidential primaries.
