Clinton: I regret saying ‘half’ of Trump support from ‘basket of deplorables’
Given about 40 percent of Americans support Trump in the polls, Clinton was basically slapping the “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic” label on about 20 percent of the country.

Clinton then listed a number of “deplorable” things about the Republican presidential candidate.
“I certainly don’t think she helped herself”.
Hillary Clinton’s comments to an audience of donors at a private fundraiser sent a shockwave through the political and media establishments Friday night.
But Trump on Saturday sought to use Clinton’s comments to make the same charge about her.
“I don’t agree with what Krystal said about those different groups, I think that it once again is just Hillary Clinton trying to divide”.
Clinton also echoed her campaign on Friday when she urged her supporters – some of whom paid $50,000 to attend the fundraiser with Streisand – to not get complacent.
“When Donald Trump and I said that the small and bullying president of Russian Federation was a strong leader on the world stage, that wasn’t an endorsement of Vladimir Putin, that was an indictment of the weak and feckless leadership of this president and [Hillary Clinton]”, Pence said at the Liberty Farms Festival in Paris, Virginia. Donald Trump tweeted about it Saturday morning.
At an LBGT fundraising event on Friday, Clinton discussed how she feared Trump’s proposed Supreme Court Justices “will overturn marriage equality”.
Trump has lamented the Obama administration’s decision not to prosecute Clinton on criminal charges over her handling of classified emails while secretary of state.
Many racist Trump supporters were stung by Clinton’s speech calling them a “basket of deplorables”.
“We are facing a candidate with a long history of racial discrimination in his business, who traffics in toxic conspiracy theories like the lie that President Obama is not a true American”, Clinton said.
Trump noted that Schlafly rooted for the underdog, and “the idea that so-called little people, or the little person that she loved so much, could beat the system – often times, the rigged system”. “Those are people who we have to understand and empathize with as well”.
Clinton added that Trump’s other supporters are people who feel they have been let down by the government and are desperate for change. “They are Americans & they deserve your respect”.

Clinton’s comments, in contrast, are clearly about people who were already voting for her opponent.
Clinton then pivoted and tried to characterize the other half of Trump’s supporters, putting them in “that other basket” and saying they need understanding and empathy.
So Democrats close to Clinton were furious Saturday that her comments were seen as controversial. “Friends don’t let friends vote for Trump”.
“I don’t know what the exact percentage is, but there’s no doubt Donald Trump is drawing out the worst impulses of his supporters ranging from racism to the outrageous chants of ‘lock her up, ‘” said Jim Manley, a Democratic strategist.

“The people who support Donald Trump’s campaign are hard-working Americans”, Pence said.
