Correspondents said Kaine’s comments were pitched to appeal to more left-leaning Democrats, who may have supported Clinton’s one-time rival, Senator Bernie Sanders. But, he said, Kaine was not the choice he was hoping for.

Even liberals were blown away by Kaine’s first speech by Clinton’s side. Trump tweeted Friday night, referring to former Virginia Gov.

He said that “America was not built on fear”, called on Trump to release his tax earnings, and criticised his business dealings, including his Atlantic City casinos and Trump University. “She’ll always have our backs.Hillary knows we’re stronger together”, Kaine said, referencing a report in the New York Times in which Trump questioned whether he’d defend North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies from Russian aggression.

Meanwhile, his campaign announced that Trump and his running mate Mike Pence would hit the election trail on Monday with Town Halls in Virginia and Pennsylvania, and campaign rally in North Carolina. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) revealed one of his greatest strengths heading into the general election: He’s fluent in Spanish. His political views are not my political views. Trump has made a hard push for Sanders fans; unlike Sanders, Kaine in the Senate has backed President Barack Obama’s proposed Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement with Asia.

“Trying to count the ways I hate @timkaine, ” Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake wrote on Twitter.

Both men had friends and allies lobbying the Clinton campaign on their behalf.

Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO labor federation, said Kaine’s decision to join Clinton in opposing the trade pact “sets an irretrievable, progressive path forward for America”.

She also used a line she has used to describe herself in an attempt to appease Sanders and other progressive supporters who feel Clinton – and now Kaine – are too moderate.

Kaine started his speech saying, “Hello Miami, hello FIU”.

But the Trump campaign wasted no time in slamming Kaine on social media.

Kaine talked about his time as a civil rights lawyer representing victims of housing discrimination in Richmond, Virginia, before breaking into politics. He learned Spanish during a mission trip to Honduras while in law school.

Family: Kaine is married to Anne Holton, Virginia’s education secretary. The couple has three children.

Trump, in a text to his own supporters, said Obama, Hillary and Kaine were “the ultimate insiders” and implored voters to not “let Obama have a 3rd term”.

JEFF GREENFIELD: Yes, I think- I think part of what they were trying to communicate was this is a comfortable two-some. “While serving in government, Kaine has taken tens of thousands of dollars in freebies – more than $160,000 in fact – on free vacations, free clothes, and free tickets”.
