Clinton, Kaine head to Ohio’s capital, Trump on their heels

As Sen. Sherrod Brown explained Thursday at the Democratic National Convention, “Rust Belt” is often an unwelcome phrase in the industrial Midwest states that fall under that label.

Here are seven takeaways from the conventions, including what to make of the pomp and circumstance of the past two weeks, and what it meant for NY state in the lead-up to the November 8 election.

In the four-way ballot test, Clinton led by 19 points among women (50 percent to 31 percent) and trailed Trump by 3 points among men (44 percent to 41 percent), the poll found.

Republican US presidential nominee Donald Trump says it’s “far-fetched” and “ridiculous” to say Russian Federation hacked Democratic Party emails to help him become president.

A combination photo shows U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (L) and Republican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump (R) in Los Angeles, California on May 5, 2016 and in Eugene, Oregon, U.S. on May 6, 2016 respectively.

“To be honest, it’s very possible in my view that Trump wins”, Romney said. And presumably Obama, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden (all with higher favorable numbers than hers) will do get-out-the-vote efforts on her behalf.

“She’s an bad candidate”.

With one in eight Missouri independents now undecided, according to the Post-Dispatch poll, their choices will be key factors on who wins the state in 2016. One would have expected to see a Trump bounce in that period.

While her speech was not as electrifying as those given by President Barack Obama and some other prominent Democrats at the Philadelphia convention, Clinton was authoritative and self-assured in her pitch to the American public.

Sitting in the convention hall each night offers a different perspective than what’s seen on TV.

The developments followed the leaking of DNC emails earlier in the week that pointed to a pro-Clinton bias by party officials during her primary contest against Bernie Sanders. It also increased Clinton’s support, but by a smaller margin. Each gets most of the support from their party’s voters, but not all.

And, yes, Trump territory isn’t as populous as Clinton’s. NY delegates wore hats that read, “Make America Greater than Ever!” emblazoned with the US and NY flags. And it could mean more Carl Paladino on the state stage.

Khizr Kahn, a Muslim whose son was one of 14 Muslims killed while serving in the military since the September 11, 2001, attacks, drew cheers when he pulled out a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution and said he wanted to show it to Trump. That more than countered Trump’s lead in southwestern Pennsylvania and other parts of the state.

What has remained constant is this lack of trust for either Clinton or Trump.

Since the convention, however, Trump’s support seems to have solidified among wary supporters.

The Clinton/Kaine team is going up against the Republican Party ticket of Donald Trump and Mike Pence. “They aren’t talking about the real world”, he said Friday morning.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, the GOP’s 2014 candidate for governor, said it’s unrealistic to expect a candidate to agree with everything a politician says, regardless of party.

In a statement, the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign ridiculed Clinton’s swing through Pennsylvania, noting that the Johnstown region had lost a significant number of manufacturing jobs since the North American Free Trade Agreement took effect during Bill Clinton’s presidency. Trump disputed that Saturday, saying he’d given up a lot for his businesses. But he described Trump’s business plan “a disaster in the making”.

Hillary Clinton’s top surrogates are taking aim at rival Donald Trump for criticizing the bereaved mother of a Muslim Army captain, a comment that sparked outrage across the political spectrum on Saturday.

But then again, Trump could lose by a landslide, Romney said in a podcast earlier this month, reports Buzzfeed. “I honestly don’t understand why the race is so close”. Republican volunteers who normally might be dispatched to Pennsylvania or OH may not get any direction.
