Clinton knocks ‘outlandish Trumpian ideas’ in economic policy speech

Bill and Hillary Clinton made most of their money in 2015 from business income, namely consulting, speaking and book royalties, for a total of $10.1 million between the couple. Clinton’s tax filings show that she and Bill Clinton donated just over $1 million to charity a year ago, the bulk of which went to the Clinton Foundation.

The Clintons’ income puts them well within the ranks of the top 0.1 percent of Americans, though they pay a higher tax rate than many of their elite peers, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation based on 2013 data.

Kaine and his wife, both longtime public employees, made just over $300,000 in 2015 and paid a federal tax rate of 20.3%.

That includes Clinton’s campaign, which released a web video Friday speculating what lies in the withheld tax returns.

U.S. Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton gestures to spectators on the last day of the 2016 U.S. Democratic National Convention at Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the United States, on July 28, 2016. “He has failed to provide the public with the most basic financial information disclosed by every major candidate in the last 40 years. What is he trying to hide?”, said Jennifer Palmieri.

Mr. Trump has said he’s being audited by the IRS, and said it doesn’t make sense to release his returns in the middle of that audit. Of the the $1,042,000 the Clintons gave to charity as listed on their return, $1 million of that went to the Clinton Family Foundation.

Frustratingly for Republicans, Trump’s missteps have overshadowed hard news for Clinton: The new release of 44 previously-unreleased email exchanges Clinton had while at the State Department.

When pressured in the past, Trump has insisted that “there’s nothing to learn” from his returns, pointing to the fact that he has released a personal financial statement – which is legally required.

Yesterday at her economic speech in Warren, Michigan, Clinton continued to press Trump on his tax holdout.

The campaign reported the Clintons’ effective tax rate as 34%, which includes the more than $300,000 the couple paid in self-employment taxes, which are payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare.

Clinton and her husband, Bill, claimed a total income of $10,745,378 in 2015, and paid federal taxes of $3,624,455. The Clintons made about 90 times more, reporting almost $28 million for the same year.

By opening up her IRS documents again, as presidential candidates from both parties have done for some four decades, Clinton may boring the effect of any attacks over her lucre. They brought in $6.7 million from speeches, mostly his, and $3.1 million from book advances and royalties, nearly entirely hers.
