A new survey shows Hillary Clinton appears to be gaining ground in the general election match-up against Donald Trump. About 22.4 percent of likely voters would not pick either candidate, according to the five-day average of results on Tuesday.
Unfavorable ratings toward both Clinton and Trump are higher than for any major-party presidential nominee in Post-ABC surveys from 1984 onward.
Among non-college whites, Trump’s favorable rating (favorable minus unfavorable) has plummeted from a plus 14 in May to a minus 7 in this survey.
Those unfavorable numbers come as Clinton secured the final number of delegates to clinch the title of being the presumptive Democratic nominee.
One key finding in the poll that neither Clinton nor Trump will like is how voters feel about the candidates.
Several Republican leaders have renounced Trump’s complaints that a the federal judge presiding over lawsuit against Trump University is biased due to his Mexican heritage, with House Speaker Paul D. Ryan saying Trump’s comments were racist.
Despite losing young voters to Bernie Sanders by vast margins, there are only minor differences in Clinton’s favorability rating among age groups.
One bit of positive news for Trump in the results is that he narrowly edges out Clinton, 45 per cent to 41 per cent, when those surveyed were asked which candidate they would have more confidence in if a similar attack to the one in Florida took place a year from now. Seventy percent said they’re bothered by her use of a private email server, while 73% said her paid speeches to Wall Street banks bother them, and 72% say the Clinton Foundation’s acceptance of foreign countries’ donations during her tenure as secretary of state bothers them.
In the Bloomberg poll, Clinton was leading with 57 percent support among women, 59 percent of those who aren’t married, and 77 percent of non-whites.
