Bernie Sanders supporters were still canvassing for voters in New Mexico as Democratic rival Hillary Clinton won commitments Monday from enough delegates to become the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Hillary Clinton headed into the primaries as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president after crossing the magic delegate threshold Monday night.

It’s not a secret that the Democratic party is not exactly united right now, with a lot of its members still supporting the Vermont Senator and Mrs. Clinton is aware of this, so she expects The Bern to withdraw from the race after Tuesday’s primaries.

Clinton won 1,812 pledged delegates in state primaries and caucuses over the past four months.

Trump, who had no opposition in the night’s GOP primaries, used his perch Tuesday to debut a more focused general election message – something that will comfort Republicans who were on the defensive over Trump’s comments about the Mexican heritage of a judge presiding over the case involving his controversial Trump University.

Those who have decided not to support Clinton are split on what to do if Sanders quits the race. “She will be dependent on superdelegates who do not vote until July 25 and who can change their minds between now and then”. She urged Mr Sanders’ supporters to consider the consequences if Mr Trump captured the White House.

The final Super Tuesday contests include voters in California, New Jersey, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota.

His campaign on Tuesday asked its supporters in Washington to sign a pledge saying they’ll vote for Sanders in the primary.

“I’m proud to vote for her and excited for her to be president”, Daniel Rubin, who voted for Clinton, said.

Mrs Clinton was waiting until most of the voting was complete before fully revelling in becoming the first woman nominated by a major USA political party.

Key to his strategy is winning Tuesday’s primary in delegate-rich California – where he has campaigned for weeks – and performing well in the five other states that also hold nominating contests Tuesday.

Early and mail-in voting has favored Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign, as her team has made extra efforts to reach out to those older voters who are more likely to avoid the lines of polling day, so early results are likely to show Clinton with a wider margin than she may finish with. Mr Sanders added to the drama by refusing to accept the AP survey and vowing to fight on, while Mr Trump argued that he had done more for women than Mrs Clinton. Over the course of the primary cycle, Clinton received support from over 200 additional delegates, while Sanders only gained 40 superdelegates for a total of 48.

At a family-owned burger joint in Watts, a man praised Clinton for her recent denunciation of Trump as “temperamentally unfit” to be commander in chief. “Sanders, his campaign and the vigorous debate that we’ve had about how to raise incomes, reduce inequality, increase upward mobility have been very good for the Democratic party and for America”.

Eschewing his usual off-the-cuff style for prepared remarks he read from a teleprompter, Trump told supporters gathered at one of his golf courses in NY that “tonight we close one chapter in history and begin another”.

Top Clinton aides expect Sanders to take a few days after California to evaluate his campaign and what he does next.

State legislative candidates from both major parties are jockeying to compete in fall elections that determine which party controls New Mexico’s House of Representative and Senate. Clinton said to her supporters Monday night in Long Beach.

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is essentially running against himself at a time when he has been trying to unite a splintered Republican Party behind his candidacy. He said calling the Democratic contest before superdelegates formally vote at the convention was a “rush to judgment”.
