“Just what will it take for Congress to overcome the intimidation of the gun lobby and do something as sensible as making sure people on the terrorist watch list can’t buy weapons?” said Clinton.

The Democratic presidential hopeful noted that President Barack Obama had spoken earlier today about the potential the shooting is a terrorist act.

House Republicans have said they do not plan to aggressively pursue new gun legislation.

She told a Women’s economic opportunity summit in New Hampshire that there’s no way to “Stop every incident of gun violence”, adding that “We can stop a lot of them”.

“We must authorize resources for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study and research the causes and effects of gun violence in the United States of America”, a Sanders campaign email said on Thursday.

“I think we are always trying to get the balance right between liberty and privacy and security and safety and that has been a balancing act from the very beginning of our country”, Clinton said, touting her support for the USA Freedom Act, a law that ended the bulk collection of phone metadata and reformed surveillance practices.

Gun control had been a flashpoint between the two Democrats before, including some sniping between the two during their first debate which led to charges Sanders was being sexist.

The Sanders campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

“I dispute this notion that somehow Bernie Sanders is awful on the issue of gun safety”, Devine said. “But we’ve already found ourselves in the current presidential cycle where some of the candidates have been bringing the issue into the political fray”. She described herself as a long-time Clinton supporter and said she appreciated Clinton’s call for congressional action in the wake of the California shootings.

Although she has rebounded from a September slump that had her at just 44 percent support, Clinton has yet to stem the meteoric rise of her rival, an independent senator from Vermont whose policies and principles have been consistent since he marched on Washington for jobs and justice with Martin Luther King, Jr. “The lieutenant governor of California, Gavin Newsom, is pushing a statewide ballot with a whole series of new gun control measures to be considered by the voters, and this may well provide a significant spur … on his part when election day rolls around”.

“I believe that she is actually talking about it and she’s talking about change that can be done on an executive level that hasn’t been done”, she said.
