Clinton Once Called TPP ‘Gold Standard’ And Had It Praised As Significant

“We want state enterprises to be able to assume the same responsibilities for fair competition as private-sector companies, so that we have a level playing field”.

Clinton, struggling with ongoing controversy surrounding her use of personal email while secretary of state, dropped 19 percentage points in the poll from May, to 47 percent.

“We’ve been negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement to bring that to fruition”, Rice said.

Hillary Clinton supports breaking up or reorganizing financial firms that are “too large and too risky to be managed effectively”, her campaign said Thursday as it unveiled a set of proposals aimed at reining in what it sees as Wall Street’s abuses.

But Clinton’s TPP opposition-which emerged in an interview with PBS Wednesday and was elaborated on in a follow-up statement from her presidential campaign-was puzzling and unconvincing to a number of observers.

Her push-back against the chief economic proposal of Obama’s second term is a blow to the president, undermining his arguments to Congress as the White House is in the final stretch of winning approval of a deal years in the making.

Save for a few vague swipes at unnamed Republicans, not one Clinton-sponsored ad through Monday pilloried Sanders, or chided Trump, or contrasted Clinton’s political or governmental records with those of Republican candidates such Bush or Sen.

The Washington Post reported, “Clinton’s stance aligns her with most of the Democratic Party, including her closest rivals on the 2016 presidential campaign trail”.

Earnest noted the “intense opposition” from Democrats in the summer, when the administration pushed for legislation giving the president “fast-track” trade promotion powers.

In opposing global efforts to foster new kinds of trade, and overthrowing years of tortuous negotiations, Clinton, intentionally or not, is sending the message that she thinks the United States should no longer lead.

While Clinton often says Obama “doesn’t get the credit he deserves” for increasing job growth, she also thinks the economy has “stalled”. “I like it”, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, the top Democrat on the Banking Committee who is among his party’s most liberal members, told Bloomberg. “Hillary Clinton’s painful waffling on TPP has been a case study in political expediency and is precisely why an overwhelming majority of Americans don’t trust her”. During a 2012 trip to Australia, she called it the “gold standard in trade agreements”.

“We need a comprehensive strategy to reduce risk everywhere in the financial system”, Mrs Clinton said in her plan.

Prior to being a presidential candidate, Clinton made comments that seemed to be in support of TPP. The deal aims to deregulate trade between the United States and the Pacific region and remove governmental oversight of trade relations.

Clinton did win the backing of a powerful labor union opposed to the deal before she publicly rejected the pact.

Assuming the president signs the pact at the end of that period, Congress then has an up or down vote on whether to accept it.

The truth is that Hillary’s biggest enemies are the same crew who took her out in her 2008 race for the White House.

For an encore, Clinton has just proposed a punitive tax on high-frequency trading, labeling risk-taking that creates liquidity in the markets as “an abuse”.
