Clinton postpones weekend visit to Charlotte

(CNN) – The mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, publicly asked Friday that the two leading presidential candidates delay plans to visit her city, which has been rocked this week by unrest following a police shooting of a black man.

“Hillary is grateful for, and intends to honor, the invitation from faith leaders to visit with the Charlotte community”, her campaign said in a statement on Friday. But Clinton made a decision to postpone the trip hours later after Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts – also a Democrat – told CNN her city’s security resources were stretched thin and urged Clinton to delay her visit. Clinton’s planned visit, announced Friday, would have come one day before her first debate with Donald Trump, and followed violent protests over Tuesday’s fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. “We must ensure justice & work to bridge divides”. “H”, Clinton said in a tweet, the “H” indicating that she personally approved the message.

Clinton will visit Charlotte next Sunday, October 2, “provided circumstances allow”. “In the meantime her prayers are with the people of Charlotte during these hard days”, she said.

Other NC leaders, including Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts and gubernatorial candidate Roy Cooper have also called for the videos to be released.

Roberts, who has seen all of the videos depicting the event, told Burnett the three clips “have obscured or blurred or it is not precise enough view of what was actually going on”. Meanwhile, his wife pleads with officers not to shoot her husband. Police later said that a gun was found nearby.

Most recently, she commented on a shooting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in which 40-year-old Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man, was killed by an officer who approached him after his vehicle broke down on the road.
