Clinton’s good enough speech and strong week

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump slammed rival Hillary Clinton after she accepted her nomination at the Democratic National Convention, reproaching her for not uttering the words “radical Islam” during her speech. Having the best résumé, doing the flawless interview and even providing the most stellar references (“Applicant saved me from a burning building once and makes a damn good cup of coffee; hire him!”) does not always guarantee that you’ll get the job.

He added, “Hillary’s vision is a borderless world where working people have no power, no jobs, no safety”. She looked like a president, she acted like a president and she shattered more glass than Shaq on a 1990s backboard. Which was important, because this is going to be one of the closest races in her political career.

But confidence was in ample supply at the Democratic convention, confidence not only in who they are but in their communitarian message.

The Clinton campaign plans to kick off next week with an organizing event in Omaha, Neb.

You got the impression that after a week of managing long lines and confused Uber drivers, the gate-security people were just there so they wouldn’t get fined.

Clinton’s image is so bad that even as she prepared to accept the nomination Thursday night, diehard supporters of Bernie Sanders posted a “Liar” sign on the convention floor. Chelsea has been doing this since she was around 14 years old.

He said Clinton “can’t hide” from her 25 years in public life. She did, and that was all.

Donald Trump’s campaign manager says that if Hillary Clinton is right that it’s, “midnight in America”, it’s the fault of Democratic leaders.

Bill Clinton seems to be so far navigating the uncharted territory of potentially being America’s first “first gentleman”. Or how about 2008, when she had to swallow her pride and speak on behalf of Barack Obama after that primary where she was supposed to be the “inevitable candidate”? It was, she said, happy news “for grandmothers and little girls and everyone in between”. We have the most tolerant and generous young people we’ve ever had.

Manafort countered that Clinton’s push for undecided voters is confusing because she’s offering to be “an Obama third term” while simultaneously vowing to “make a change”.

Trump alleged that Clinton had made up facts about him and criticized media coverage of the Democratic convention and her speech.

Trump said in a press conference this week: “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing”. I disagree. Clinton is that qualified employee. “Americans don’t say: ‘I alone can fix it.’ We say: ‘We’ll fix it together.’ Remember: Our Founders fought a revolution and wrote a Constitution so America would never be a nation where one person had all the power”.

“America is once again at a moment of reckoning”, she said.

Trump wasn’t the only one to go after Clinton’s tone.

The theme of the Democratic convention was “Stronger Together”, and the final day of the convention – and Hillary Clinton’s acceptance speech – proved the point. She won’t promise to carry us to a glittering golden future, but she’ll promise to work hard, to care, to be steady and dogged, and to play a part in an effort that requires the rest of us to succeed.
