There is a perception in Russia that the Clinton campaign is raising the Russian hacking issue to draw attention away from the content of the leaked emails, some of which showed the DNC supporting Clinton over her rival for the nomination, Bernie Sanders.
As I’ve said, Democrats may be a bit ahead of the intelligence community in their level of confidence that Russian Federation is actively working to elect Trump as president, but there is plenty of circumstantial evidence lending credence to that idea.
The Daily Beast this week uncovered a 2013 interview with Trump in Moscow in which he said, “I do have a relationship” with Putin, although the two men did not meet, according to the report. “We see a lot of money pouring in from Russian Federation”. And the Russians are overjoyed at the prospect of having an American president who appears not to think much of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the security alliance that kept Moscow’s ambitions in check throughout the Cold War and helped bring down the Soviet Union. “I think you will be mightily rewarded by our press”.

Trump responded by simultaneously criticizing the US’s decision not to intervene to stop the annexation of Crimea, a former Ukrainian territory seized by Russian Federation in 2014, and noting that many citizens of Crimea were allegedly supportive of Russia’s decision to invade.
