Clinton Stands By ‘Deplorables,’ But Walks Back The Basket Size A Bit
The latest phrase to provoke a political freak-out was unveiled Friday night at Hillary Clinton’s LGBT fundraiser in NY, where Clinton called out Donald Trump’s “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic” followers and shamed the Republican nominee for encouraging some of his devotees’ hateful rhetoric.

“As I said, many of Trump ” s supporters are hard-working Americans who just don’t feel like the economy or our political system are working for them.
Hillary Clinton said Saturday that she regretted describing “half” of Republican Donald Trump’s supporters as “a basket of deplorables” in remarks at a fundraiser. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it”.
Clinton on Thursday said Trump’s comment was “not just unpatriotic and insulting to the people of our country, as well as to our commander in chief, it is scary”. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people – now how 11 million.
Speaking at an evening fundraiser in NY, the former U.S. secretary of state said Trump had given voice to hateful rhetoric from such individuals through his behaviour as a candidate for the White House.
“ If they’re not going to take care of us properly, we can not afford to be the military and the police for the world”, he said on CNN at the time, discussing USA armed forces stationed in Japan and South Korea and whether those nations should be able to build nuclear weapons.
Mr. Trump countered that Mrs. Clinton’s response is “disgraceful”.
Some critics said Clinton’s comment recalled 2012 Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” comment in which he said 47 percent of voters are dependent upon the government and would vote for President Barack Obama no matter what.
The media are often prevented from attending Mrs Clinton’s fundraisers, but Friday’s event, which featured a performance from Barbara Streisand, had been open to journalists.
Trump suggested at the event in which he and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton made back-to-back appearances that US generals had been stymied by the policies of Obama and Clinton, who served as the Democratic president’s first secretary of state. A CNN/ORC poll this week found Trump near even with Clinton among likely voters nationwide.
Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said in a series of tweets after the remarks that Clinton has been talking about the “alternative right”, or “alt-right” movement, which often is associated with efforts on the far right to preserve “white identity”, oppose multiculturalism and defend “Western values”.
Clinton was scheduled on Friday to meet with former senior national security officials in NY.
Responding to a question, Trump called Clinton a “bad person” and alleged that she would be a “disaster” for evangelicals. Her campaign headed for a casket. “We are commanded”, she said. I think she blew a gasket.

Trump spoke at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis Saturday, where he said that Schlafly is looking down on those gathered, telling them to “keep up the fight”. He said members of the extreme right, known as the “alt right”, were using Trump to advance a hate agenda.
