Clinton struggles to win over younger women

As of 3:30 Wednesday afternoon, 1,556 Sanders supportershad signed a MoveOn.org petition asking the six New Hampshire superdelegates who have pledged to support Clinton to change their minds.

“Instead, I’m going to hold a fundraiser right here, right now, across America”, Sanders told supporters Tuesday night. A couple of tin-eared statements from two high-profile Clinton surrogates notwithstanding, it would be foolish for women – or men who truly believe in diversity – to underestimate the importance of Clinton being in position to become the first woman to win the White House.

The fact of the matter is the two of them, like Secretary Clinton said today, agree on basically every policy issue, and I agree with them on basically every policy issue.

“There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other”, Albright said at an event in New Hampshire Saturday. Clinton’s more pragmatic ideas and complicated public history are a tough sell.

Sanders also pointed out that he has defended Hillary Clinton “against some unfair attacks” in the past, “but I felt that President Clinton said things that were just not accurate and I hope we get” beyond that, he said.

Hillary Clinton acknowledges that many voters are frustrated and angry and want a fresh start.

She has promoted endorsements from women’s organizations, campaigned with female elected officials and sought to impress younger women with surrogates like pop star Katy Perry and actress Lena Dunham.

These comments were largely seen as dismissive and sexist, suggesting young women are not politically savvy enough to make their own choices. It does not resonate.

Sander’s first stop after leaving New Hampshire was a meeting with the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem, and Hillary Clinton’s campaign sent daughter Chelsea to predominately black Flint, Michigan, to make political hay out of that city’s current water crisis. The only age demographic Clinton won in New Hampshire were voters over the age of 65 – part of the Baby Boom Generation born in the years after World War II.

Stephanie Schriock, the president of Emily’s List, which supports Democratic women who back abortion rights as they run for Congress and governors, and who has been campaigning for Clinton in the early states, argued that the idea Clinton was losing women was “overblown”. Millennial women graduate college at record numbers.

Although Sanders won 60% of the vote vs. Clinton’s 38%, he leaves the state with at least 13 delegates, while she leaves with at least 15. Young Democrats flocked to Barack Obama in 2008, to Howard Dean in 2004, to Bill Clinton in 1992.

“Together we have sent the message that will echo from Wall Street to Washington, from ME to California, and that is that the government of our great country belongs to all of the people and not just a handful of wealthy campaign contributors”, Sanders said in his victory speech. Aides say it’s the most money he has raised in less than a day and comes as the Vermont senator races to build a campaign war chest to survive a lengthy nomination battle with Clinton. “The more people speak up, the more likely it is that the party and the superdelegates are to listen”, she continued.

Watch how Sanders, his New Hampshire blowout behind him, capitalizes on the attention by introducing himself to Americans who know little about his socialist self. She’s awesome. I love her.
