Clinton surges toward Democratic presidential nomination with trifecta of Northeast wins

Sanders won one state, Rhode Island; he still faces long mathematical odds, but looked ahead to May and June contests.

“I applaud Sen. Sanders and his millions of supporters for challenging us to get unaccountable money out of politics and putting greater emphasis to closing the gap of inequality”, she said.

In Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional District, for example, GOP primary voters didn’t just have to pick among Cruz, Trump, or Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Sanders, however, did not take the state as a whole, as The Associated Press reported Clinton took more than 55 percent of Pennsylvania.

Cruz said the northeast may not have favored him, but upcoming states will.

Trump has already criticised the system in Pennsylvania, where the Republican victor is awarded 17 delegates, but 54 other delegates will be unbound and free to vote for any candidate at the convention.

In Maryland, Clinton was supported by three-quarters of black voters, who made up almost half of all voters in the state.

Trump, in an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, said Wednesday he hadn’t “quite recovered – it’s early in the morning – from her shouting that message”.

Briggs insisted that the move is not a response to flagging fundraising, saying that the campaign continues to raise cash from supporters “very strongly”.

In Pennsylvania, Clinton won with the support of black voters, women and those looking for an experienced candidate who can win in November. And he focussed on Clinton more in his remarks, slamming her for, among other things, playing the woman card. She didn’t play it last time [in 2008] with Obama but she is playing it much harder this time.

For Cruz, it was a rough night. Four in 10 in CT, a third in Pennsylvania and three in 10 in Maryland said they wouldn’t vote for Cruz if he was the GOP nominee. And in Pennsylvania, almost 6 in 10 said they would be either concerned or scared about a Cruz presidency.

The exit polls were conducted in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Democratic voters say the closely contested primary has excited the party. “And what happened was one by one they disappeared”.

After their victories, Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton turned their fire on each other. “There’s no path”, said Trump.

Virginia held its presidential primaries on May 1 giving Trump and Clinton wins on Super Tuesday.

Cruz is eyeing a win in IN next week to deny Trump delegates needed to lock up the nomination before the Republican National Convention in July with the hope of forcing multiple rounds of balloting.

“The people in every state in this country should have the right to determine who they want as President and what the agenda of the Democratic Party should be”, Sanders said. It was also the only state that was an open party that allowed voters who aren’t Democrats to participate in the primary.
