Clinton to make economy her ‘primary mission’

While making history in becoming the first woman to be nominated by a major party, Clinton shared the spotlight with many others, including her husband, former President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, the Republican nominee. “They’re angry. He was angry”, Trump said. No matter who you plan to vote for this November, we have all just collectively witnessed something monumentous. “And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump”. “A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons”, Clinton said of Trump. They say: “We’ll fix it together'”. “Instead we will build an economy where everyone who wants a good job can get one”, said Clinton, to thunderous applause. “She’ll finish the job – and she’ll do it without resorting to torture, or banning entire religions from entering our country”. “Your cause is our cause”, she said, although boos were audible at points in the speech.

“We are clear-eyed about what our country is up against, but we are not afraid”, she said. That is the story of America. “Yes, America’s destiny is ours to choose”. Last week, it was Ivanka Trump introducing her dad, tonight it’s Chelsea Clinton introducing her mom.

In the biggest speech of her more than 25-year-old career in the public eye, Clinton, 68, cast herself as a steady leader at a “moment of reckoning” for the country, and contrasted her character with what she described as Trump’s unsafe and volatile temperament. Hillary did get more votes than Bernie.

As these two sides of the American Left duked it out, the Democrats visibly fossilised into the party of the dot com millionaire and the professional activist – as far flung to the Left of the U.S. political spectrum as the Republicans are to the Right.

Thursday was the final day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, and the focus of the Washington delegation was on presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Regarding terrorism and other national security threats, Clinton pointed to her experience in the White House, as a senator and as secretary of state – a resumé that can’t be matched by Trump, a real estate developer and TV star who has never held office.

In stark contrast with Trump’s speech a week ago, which created a dark and foreboding picture of America, Hillary Clinton underscored its diversity and idealism in crafting her 57-minute address. Already we know balloons are in place, and the big speech-like Donald Trump’s last week-will involve a daughter-delivered introduction.
