Clinton told FBI Colin Powell suggested she use private email

Reached for comment by CNN, Powell’s principal assistant, Peggy Cifrino, said the former four-star general had “no recollection” of the conversation described in the book but said he did send Clinton a memo outlining his use of a personal email account for material that was not classified.

He used a secure department computer to manage classified information, the statement said. Separately, in a 2009 email exchange that also emerged during the F.B.I. questioning, Mrs. Clinton, who had already chose to use private email, asked Mr. Powell about his email practices when he was the nation’s top diplomat under George W. Bush, according to a person with direct knowledge of Mr. Powell’s appearance in the documents, who would not speak for attribution. Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice also attended. Those notes, found in what is called a Form 302 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are classified Top Secret, but the Times was alerted to the details by an anonymous source “with knowledge of its contents”.

Even if Powell had talked up a private email account, it doesn’t even begin to excuse what Clinton did.

The two situations are slightly different, as Powell didn’t have a separate server, but instead just a different email account, which he used through AOL on his own personal laptop.

Now she wants to pass the buck to Colin Powell for the decisions she made.

Powell’s use of a personal email account was included in his memoir, “It Worked for Me”, the report noted.

Powell’s precedent, such as it is, is no justification for Clinton’s actions with regard to her own private server. Nor are these documents necessary for Republicans to pursue their (far-fetched) claim that Clinton committed perjury when she testified about her emails before the House Benghazi committee.

Conason is described by the newspaper as a “longtime defender of the Clintons”. Powell says he sent Hillary Clinton a memo touting his use of a personal email account after she took over as the nation’s top diplomat in 2009.

According to Conason’s book, it was at this dinner that Powell told Clinton to use a personal email account.

Conason alleges in the book that there was a meeting, at a dinner party, in the early months of Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State at Madeleine Albright’s home.
