Clinton, Trump in prep mode ahead of first debate

Sources say Donald Trump’s preparation is less formal, focusing on discussion of issues over lunch instead of mock debates.

The announcement came late Sunday in a tweet by the Republican presidential nominee after days of wavering – and at least one canceled speech – on a question central to his campaign: Whether he would, as he said in November, use a “deportation force” to eject the estimated 11 million people in the US illegally.

“Citizens around the country will see, as I’ve have seen, the heart and compassion Mr. Trump has for all Americans, which includes minority communities whose votes have been taken for granted for far too long”, Burns said in the statement.

They said Trump’s immigration policy will be humane, and insisted he has not been wavering on the issue.

The campaign is expecting to air a new ad, which paints rival Hillary Clinton as a job-killer, as soon as Monday in nine states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida, where the campaign has already been on the air, along with New Hampshire, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada – all battleground states. But any significant shift could disappoint his core supporters. He reiterated calls by Donald Trump’s campaign for the federal government to appoint a special prosecutor to examine possible corruption.

Meanwhile, Trump and his campaign sought to visibly improve their outreach to Latino voters last week, with the GOP nominee softening his tone on immigration and convening a Hispanic Advisory Council for input.

“I don’t think he’s in any better or worse (shape) than the average person that goes and exercises every single day”, Trump’s doctor, Harold Bornstein, said to NBC when asked about the candidate’s health.

Governor Mike Pence of Indiana, Trump’s running mate on the Republican presidential ticket, would not affirm that their administration would expel the estimated 11 million immigrants who are in the country illegally, a campaign-defining stance that helped Trump vanquish opponents in the primary race.

Trump’s supporters say questions about his recent waffling are overblown. You have this speech coming up on Wednesday, immigration, his signature issue, can he come up with a consistent position?

The speech has been rescheduled at least once.

The announcement Sunday came after Trump said in a tweet late Friday afternoon that he’ll be in Phoenix on August 31.

“Well, what you heard him describe there, in his usual plainspoken, American way, was a mechanism, not a policy”.

If you only read one thing: Four weeks from tonight, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will face off in the first of three debates organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates. In an interview with CNN last week, his new campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said the question of whether he would create a deportation force was “to be determined”. That, he said, “is a subject for the future”.
