Clinton, Trump navigate politics of police violence
Terence Crutcher was shot and killed Friday after Tulsa Officer Betty Shelby responded to a call about a vehicle that appeared to be abandoned in the middle of the road.

The footage does not offer a clear view of when Shelby fired the single shot that killed Crutcher. A female officer is following him.
A Trump’s spokesman said there was no intent for the foundation to make any improper payment and said The Washington Post got their facts wrong.
Lewis said he and Police Chief Chuck Jordan discussed community policing and policies, including psychological evaluations and blood tests for officers involved in shootings.
During an African-American outreach event Wednesday in Cleveland, Trump said the victim in Tulsa “looked like a really good man”, and he questioned the actions of the police officer: “Did she get scared?” In Tulsa, an unarmed man with his hands in the air? Meanwhile, the Crutcher family is left to protest and grieve over the latest example of anti-black violence by law enforcement. Shelby allegedly turned around to look into the driver’s side and saw Crutcher walking toward her, the attorney said. But those orders can not be heard in the audio from the dashcam video, which starts as another patrol auto pulls up to the scene, showing Crutcher walking toward the SUV with his hands up as Shelby follows him, apparently with her weapon drawn and pointing at Crutcher.
Terence Crutcher’s 4-year-old son was already asking where his slain father had gone. It’s whether the officer reasonably believed in his or her own mind that they or fellow officers were in danger at the split second they choose to shoot. Records obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday show that when Crutcher was ordered to exit the vehicle for a pat-down search, he began making a movement to his right ankle before an officer managed to get control of Crutcher. After the footage was released Monday suggesting otherwise, spokeswoman Jeanne MacKenzie said she was relying on reports from officers at the time.
“He is not threatening to anyone”, lawyer Benjamin Crump said.
Sgt. Dave Walker confirmed Tuesday that investigators found a vial of PCP in Crutcher’s SUV. Shelby’s attorney, Scott Wood, maintains that Crutcher refused to follow more than two dozen commands and that he reached into the open window of the auto before Shelby perceived a threat and shot him.
Was the vehicle window open? “I don’t know what she was thinking but I’m very, very troubled by that”, Trump said, calling it a “terrible situation”. His family has said that Scott was unarmed and reading a book in his auto, but the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police says that Scott came out of the vehicle with a gun. He then pulled his hand away and put his hands up in the air, even though he was not instructed to do so, which Shelby found odd, Wood said.

Shelby’s lawyer, Scott Wood, has argued that Crutcher was not following officers’ commands, and that his client was afraid because the man kept reaching for his pocket. “How can he be reaching into the vehicle if the window is up and there is blood on the glass?”
