Next Monday’s first presidential debate may mark the next opportunity for voters to take another look.

“Obviously I will be practicing, but I don’t want to put so much practice in that all of a sudden, you’re not who you are”, Trump said. He knows how to command attention, deflect piercing questions, and attack his opponent in ways that tend to both entertain and awe. The reality show star publicly flirted for several years with the idea that Obama was born not in Hawaii but in Kenya. As so many free speech advocates have urged, the best way to fight speech is with more speech-likewise with social movements: the best way to contend against Trump’s movement is with our own. We have yet to see Donald Trump’s polling numbers go above about 46 percent. During his Sunday meetings in Bedminster, New Jersey – where he huddles with Campaign Chief Steve Bannon, Campaign Manager Kellyanne Conway, Roger Ailes and other advisers, including members of his family – the prep has become more of a discussion of topics and themes and not specific in nature.

Forty-one percent of likely voters reported that Trump was more honest, compared to only 31 percent who reported that Clinton was more honest. It is suggested that it is not enough for Donald Trump to simply lose; instead, he must lose by a wide margin-and, we are further told, that if this sort of defeat of Trump does not take place, it is our fault and not the fault of Hillary Clinton, the Clinton campaign, or the Democratic Party. Clinton’s liability is trustworthiness. Wisconsin, which holds 10 electoral votes, has not gone Republican since 1984.

The debate Monday night will be a study of contrasts.

Columnist Dan Rodricks’ piece on why some voters support Donald Trump was insulting (“Given positive economic trends, Trump a big risk”, September 17).

A 36-year-old Clinton supporter, on the other hand, said: “She [Clinton] would make a fine president, but I am concerned about her trustworthiness”.

But it may not be all fireworks and showmanship for Trump, because his base of supporters will not defect. “He will be prepared, but most importantly, he will be himself”.

President Obama signed a presidential memorandum Wednesday establishing that climate-change impacts must be factored into the development of all national security-related doctrine, policies and plans.

Mike McCurry, the cochairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates and former press secretary for Bill Clinton, has a pretty good job description for the moderator – “to get out of the way”. If she can not persuade disaffected Republicans to support her, despite ideological differences, then her chances at winning the election are quite a bit narrower.

Another must win state for Trump is North Carolina, where he has less than a 60 per cent chance of winning, according to FiveThirtyEight.
