Closest finishes in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history

A week after leading all but one lap at Las Vegas, Busch led 175 of 200 laps on the mile oval to win for the 79th time in the second-tier series.

Phoenix International Raceway featured one of the most breathtaking and fun endings ever to a NASCAR Sprint Cup race today. He won the 2007 Daytona 500 by a scant two one-hundredths of a second over Mark Martin.

“I just like racing here”, Harvick said. “And I know he doesn’t want to lose to me”. “There’s a lot on the line”.

“I knew he was better through (Turns) 3 and 4”, Harvick said. “Yeah, I think the whole field is chasing those guys and chasing Kevin and that [No.] 4 vehicle at this track”.

Harvick, on the high side, turned into Edwards’ door first to try to slow his momentum. He is tied with No. 18 Toyota driver Kyle Busch for the race points. “It worked out, just barely”. To feel as good as I do – no sore spots or aches or pains – is really good. “I moved him, and it was just a drag race”. At the beginning of race weekend, Harvick lacked speed.

Edwards started fourth on the green-white-checkered restart, with Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in front of him and Austin Dillon beside him – the only drivers who had stayed out and did not pit after a Kasey Kahne crash brought out the caution with five laps to go. He fended off Carl Edwards in the sport’s version of “overtime”, beating and banging with the Joe Gibbs Racing driver all the way to the stripe to earn the win by. “I knew that I was going to get hit and I’m going to hit him”. “Goodyear’s made some tires for us, so it’s hard to have a very good idea on how much the track has changed and how much the tires and this new low downforce package will make the track change”.

Denny Hamlin, who recovered from 26th following an uncontrolled tire during the first caution on Lap 54, finished third followed by Kyle Busch and Earnhardt.

Busch started the race and led the first 74 laps.

When Jimmie Johnson jumps on the gas, he pulls on the steering wheel.

Harvick, though, found a way to win at what’s become nearly his personal track.

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver has now won six of the last eight races at the Phoenix mile.

“A knack for this place, I guess”, Busch said. Long story short, not a good day for Hendrick.

Team Penske racer Power’s lap on 1min, 0.9431 of a second at 106.329 miles per hour was the best for any of the 22 drivers set the compete for the crown, but still.

“Sometimes I can tell you that you plan it all that way, but sometimes you’re just lucky as hell”. You can get live updates and scoring NASCAR’s Race Center. You have to win.

The Good Sam 500 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET, and you can see all the action Sunday on FOX. “I thought we had a auto that could win”.

Earnhardt started the race in the 26th spot but had the fastest vehicle on the track throughout the opening laps. He can’t race again until he’s been medically cleared by IndyCar. Johnson was puzzled as to why he lost control and praised Phoenix International Raceway for the SAFER Barriers installed.

“To be honest, I was surprised he qualified”.

Johnson said he should have checked before going on his qualifying run that the steering wheel was secured in the column.
