Penn’s interview with Guzman was published the day after the drug lord was recaptured.

Following that meeting, which Mexican authorities had known about, troops entered Guzman’s remote mountain stronghold in northwestern Mexico in order to “spit him out toward a city”, a government official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

After a shootout with Mexican marines in which five people died, Guzman was nabbed once more on January 8, and Mexican officials are now apparently willing to let the United States take him off their hands to stand trial.

Mexican daily Milenio late on Tuesday published alleged private messages between del Castillo and Guzman.

CNN legal analyst Joey Jackson said at first glance, it does not appear Penn and del Castillo broke any laws.

Sean Penn will sit down with USA newsman Charlie Rose to discuss his meeting with fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman on TV for the first time.

With its own communications network, and surveillance posts on the surrounding peaks, the rustic redoubt had everything the drug boss needed, but was hardly befitting of a mega-rich drug trafficker who was once on the Forbes list of billionaires.

The U.S. government wants Guzman, who is believed to be 58 years old, tried on charges ranging from money laundering to drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder.

“Since he arrived, he has been in eight different cells”, Sanchez said of Guzman’s time in prison. “The reality is that these types of criminals have raped women, have killed children, have tortured women and men”.

Barabas quickly capitalised on the drug kingpin’s taste for the abstract-design shirt that features bright blue stripes, posting on its Facebook page, “EL CHAPO GUZMAN WEARING BARABAS SHIRT!” He could barely write, but is very intelligent, the ex-official said.

A senior Mexican law official said authorities want to question Penn and del Castillo, and especially want to learn more about where the interview took place.

Barragan y Salvatierra said that meeting with Guzman for journalistic purposes would be a solid defense.

Analysts said factors likely to weigh in the decision of where to try Guzman are the location of cooperating witnesses, which district has the strongest case, which indictment might result in the most severe penalty and where were the most serious of the alleged crimes committed.

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico’s government is moving Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman constantly from cell to cell inside the maximum security prison where he is being held, the same lockup the elusive drug lord escaped from through a tunnel six months ago. In a testament to globalization, the Tribune also reports that Chicago officials have nicknamed Guzman “Public Enemy No. 1″-which is how they once upon a time used to refer to Chicago gangster Al Capone”. In the meantime, they plan to take extraordinary measure to prevent a third escape. He was captured after a gunfight on Friday.

But Penn’s interview with El Chapo and his article in Rolling Stone have annoyed journalists who normally cover Mexico and the drug war.
