Children in Greenville County, South Carolina, told police clowns had tried to lure them into the woods, even offering them money to follow, according to a report by The New York Times.

In Huntingdon County, police said in a release that the clown did not make any threats.

Several children reported a series of clown sightings in different neighborhoods of Annapolis, Maryland, CBS affiliate WJZ-TV reported Monday.

In the release, police also asked that the public “use restraint and allow police to handle the situation”. They should do anything they can, including kicking and screaming “this is not my dad” or “this is not my mom”, to avoid being taken away by a stranger, and they should report anything suspicious to their parents, the police or any adult at school.

Suspicious clown sightings have cropped up nationwide recently, with communities in Alabama, Georgia, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, and North and SC, among others, making reports throughout the summer.

Mysterious sightings of creepy clowns have been reported in other states in recent weeks.

The request came Monday night after multiple children reported seeing a person or persons wearing a clown costume and face paint in Annapolis, the police department said in a statement.

The rash of sightings is similar to the fall of 2014, when creepy clowns were reported first in California and then in locations across the country.
