Diving to investigate, he found the massive pearl inside the clam, retrieved it, and then kept it under his bed for the next decade as a good luck charm.

Nearly as unbelievable as the pearl itself is the fact that the man, not knowing its actual monetary value, reportedly kept it as a “good luck charm” in his home for ten years. The pearl, which measures 30 centimeters wide (1 foot) and 67 centimeters long (2.2 feet), was presented to Amurao when the owner’s home was ravaged by fire recently. He had to swim to move the anchor when he found a giant pearl. Amurao encouraged Filipinos to raise awareness of the potential record-breaking pearl.

According to the Guardian, he had been keeping the 34kg pearl hidden in his bedroom as a good luck charm and would touch it before leaving on a fishing trip.

Keep it “under your pillow”?

Aileen Amurao, a relative of the fisherman and tourism officer for Puerto Princesa city on western Palawan island, said the man gave her the pearl last month for safekeeping because he was moving to a new place. Since then, she made a decision to publicly display the rare pearl at the Puerto Princesa City Hall.

“So far based on our research in the web we can not find any recorded article about this kind and as big as this size”, she said.

The man told them the story of how he found the pearl.

A fisherman in the island province of Palawan in the Philippines has been keeping a huge secret: the world’s largest pearl has been under his bed for the past ten years. It was unveiled to the public on Monday 22 August, 2016 at Puerto Princesa City Hall. The 14-kilogramme “Pearl of Allah”, also known as the “Pearl of Lao Tzu”, is often referred to as the world’s largest.

Amurao posted to her Facebook account calling on to expert gemologists to verify the weight, authenticity and value of the pearl. She added that as of now, depending upon the research on the internet, no recorded article or piece of information has been found regarding this type and size of pearl.
