CNN’s Chris Cuomo saves drowning Hamptons man from Peconic River

CNN host Chris Cuomo usually delivers the news – but he’s making some headlines of his own after saving a man from drowning this weekend.

Philippe East Hampton club managing partner Frank Cilione said Cuomo, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s brother, threw the man a life preserver, then jumped into the water, swam to him and pulled him to shore.

Shelter Island Police Chief James J. Read confirmed the story and said a bay constable “was able to get both [Cuomo and the unnamed man] onboard and transported them [to safety]”.

A friend of Cuomo’s told the Post that “Chris saved this man’s life…”

The man was exhausted from fighting the current and barely had his head above water when Cuomo reached him after swimming for about 500 to 600 feet. “He didn’t look right.’ And he said, ‘I’m not doing well, ‘” Chris Cuomo recounted today on his show, CNN’s “New Day.”

He was on a fishing boat with his wife and their children when they saw the man in distress. “I was leaving it alone, because I didn’t want to reveal the guy”, he admitted. “So I didn’t think”.

Cuomo recommended people think before jumping in fast-moving water. “As he came by us, I said, ‘Hey how ya doing?’ He didn’t look right”.

“Chris threw him a life preserver, but the man still didn’t start swimming, so Chris jumped in the water and went after him. I just went in and got him, and it was hard for us to swim across but we eventually did”.

The host assured that he would’ve never talked about it, but someone called it in to a paper.
