CNN Selectively Edits Milwaukee Shooting Victim’s Sister’s Words to Protesters

But protests were expected to continue in the northern suburbs of Milwaukee, where police shot and killed 23-year-old Sylville K.Smith on Saturday afternoon.

Eight officers were wounded, and dozens of people were arrested, police said.

“When there is an officer-involved shooting, I think police departments should err on the side of releasing that footage after they’ve made sure privacy concerns are protected”, Chavis says.

The identity of the police officer who shot and killed Sylville Smith appeared on social media and was confirmed today by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Police cited Smith’s “lengthy criminal record” as they identified him. The Wisconsin Justice Department is reviewing the shooting.

The ACLU’s letter to Attorney General Brad Schimel notes that he promised a thorough, fast and transparent investigation.

Police Chief Edward Flynn said spreading “rumor mill” will only fuel protesters.

The weekend shooting in Milwaukee was distinct in that the person killed was armed, according to the police account.

Gov. Scott Walker has already activated the Wisconsin National Guard in case their assistance is needed.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has campaigned with Trump, was also part of the meeting. An injured officer was taken to a hospital after a rock broke the windshield of his squad auto, police said.

The chief’s statement raised questions about whether authorities could have taken steps to curb the violence, perhaps by sharing details of the shooting earlier, including the officer’s race or footage from his body camera.

The officer is 24.

That is when CNN chose to press “stop” and air the video, before Smith had the chance to continue her speech. The high school now has about 1,500 students. That resentment also comes in the form of increased racial tensions among blacks, who are stopped by police for “driving while black, walking while black, doing anything while black” Wilson said.

Sunday evening had initially begun peacefully as residents had gathered to mourn Smith as his family and friends held a candlelight vigil at the site of Saturday’s shooting in a residential area of North Milwaukee.

King Rick says Milwaukee has “always been primed for insurrection and it came to fruition”. “The vast preponderance of the community in this neighborhood has responded to positive messaging and is clearly not interested in doing damage to where they live”, Flynn said.

Burning down neighborhood business establishments, throwing bricks at cops, trashing police cars and chasing white people – all features of the Milwaukee riots – may feel good, but they are simply more symptoms of the social breakdown that police are asked to respond to every day. He beat a shooting rap at a jury trial in 2015 when a witness recanted, allegedly after Smith intimidated him. It’s not clear when the event with police and veterans was scheduled.

“What you have are individuals who have been devalued, who have a lack of opportunity. who don’t see any hope”, Taylor said.

“We have unrest happening in the city and we want peace”.

Five members of the group are at City Hall Tuesday morning asking to meet with council members. The situation could change rapidly, however, Flynn warned.

The Black Panther group’s leader, King Rick, declined to give his last name. But despite the violence, police said the guardsmen were not called in.

The department also tweeted Tuesday that only one shot was sacked, which is far fewer than the previous two nights. Four officers were injured, as was a 16-year-old girl who was hit by what Flynn thought was crossfire, and 17 people were arrested-most for civil disobedience, but four for burglary.

Along with massive fire damage to a number of businesses and automobiles, one white teenager was shot during the rioting thus far. It was not clear whether he had pointed the gun at the officers. The state is investigating.

“Don’t bring that violence here”, Kimberly Neal, another sister, said, sobbing as she lamented that she would never be able to again hug her brother. The violence continued, to a lesser degree, on Sunday night.

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn and Mayor Tom Barrett addressed the press at around 10:30 p.m. Monday at Sherman Park.

Police made several arrests earlier on Monday evening and officers in riot gear cordoned off Sherman Park, where the shooting took place and the scene of violent protests that have gripped the U.S. city.
