Coach Gus Malzahn: Auburn’s 3-way QB rotation didn’t work
“We weren’t as successful as we thought we’d be”, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said at a press conference. At some points, quarterbacks were swapped during drives.

“The takeaway is we played a pretty good defense and the takeaway for me is we have a chance to be a pretty good offense”, Malzahn said.
“I think we’ll just see how the season unfolds”, Malzahn said.
Johnson, who finished with a team-high 94 yards on 23 carries in his first game as Auburn’s No. 1 option, said Tuesday he was “a little surprised” at Pettway’s lack of carries against Clemson. He hangs in there. He can throw the ball down the field.
Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, left, sacks Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson during the first half of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, in Auburn, Ala. If Malzahn is to be believed, Auburn will roll with White (exclusively) in the wars to come. I’m thrilled with a good bit of it, too. “Obviously, it wasn’t. The changing in and out hurt our tempo, obviously”.
Gus Malzahn is sorting out a quarterback situation that appeared oddly chaotic in Auburn’s opening game.
Entering the season with every accolade from every major sports entity (including yours truly) and having been crowned the greatest offense of all time prior to the team having played one down on the field, the Clemson offense learned a hard lesson Saturday night – you still have to play the game. “Going forward people are going to be put on notice that Auburn’s defense is back”.
“They don’t really give us a lot of credit nowadays, so we’re trying to make people talk about us”, Holsey said.
Asked about his thought process for the Clemson game plan, he said, “Going into the first game the plan was we were going to throw a lot at them”.
“Overall, if you look at the big picture of things, we played the No. 2 team in the country – a team that played in the national championship a year ago with a majority of their guys back – and had a chance to win the game, so that’s a positive moving forward”, he said. “John Franklin will get the No. 2 reps this week in practice”. We weren’t as successful as I thought we would be with those, but that was the plan.
