Samantha Broberg, 33, was declared missing Friday afternoon from a Carnival cruise ship en route from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico.
The statement says crews searched for 20 hours and covered more than 4,300 square miles.
All passengers were checked and Broberg was unaccounted for.
According to the website CruiseJunkie.com, which tracks man overboard incidents on cruise ships, over the past five years an average of 23 people fall overboard from cruise ships each year.
The Carnival Liberty left Galveston, Texas, on Thursday on a four-day cruise of Mexico.
Search efforts continued into Sunday evening as experts said warm waters around the Mexican Gulf meant she could have survived, however the search has now been suspended.
Carnival says that video shows Broberg sitting on a railing on the 10th floor of the ship, then falling over backward into the Gulf around 3am.
It is not known if she was traveling with her husband.
“Carnival’s CareTeam is providing support to the guest’s travelling companions and family”. We are keeping our guest and her loved ones in our thoughts during this hard time’. After a ship-wide search and a review of surveillance video, “it appears the guest may have gone overboard”.
A Coast Guard spokesman tells ABC News the search for a missing woman has now been suspended.
The woman’s family released a statement Saturday asking for privacy.
