Coast Guard says 1 dead, 4 injured in Alaska plane crash

The woman who died in a plane crash in Alaska was the pilot of the aircraft and is originally from Birmingham, Alabama.

Three people were rescued following a plane crash in southeast Alaska on Friday, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said.

The Guard said that four survivors have been found, and flown to a hospital in Juneau for treatment.

USCG Petty Officer Grant DeVuyst says hiking to the crash site from a nearby beach was impractical.

The caller’s name was not released, but police said it matched the name of one of the people on the missing plane.

The status of the other two on board wasn’t immediately clear. The company said on its website that the plane had been involved in an accident.

The plane belonged to charter flight company Wings of Alaska, which also confirmed the crash.

Juneau police said several rescue teams were en route, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska State Troopers and the Capital City Fire Rescue out of Juneau.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified, and search and rescue efforts were initiated, authorities say.

The National Weather Service reported light rain and fog in the area.

Earlier Friday afternoon, Coast Guard watchstanders received an emergency beacon alert.

The search comes less than one month after a sightseeing floatplane crashed in a mountainous area in southeast Alaska, killing all nine people on board.
