Colbert Reveals ‘Late Show’ Debut ‘Almost Didn’t Get On The Air’
The program – which featured interviews with George Clooney and Jeb Bush – was the most-watched, late-night show of the evening.

Thankfully, everything did work out, and Colbert carried over his opening night energy into his second episode, which included the premiere of two new (presumably) recurring segments, including “Big Furry Hat”.
If that’s the case, the ripple effect from Colbert’s new Late Show could be especially large as viewers tune in to see how the real Stephen Colbert handles a talk show. The show was a little long … you know, first show, you want to do a lot. Industry insiders say that Colbert’s new show is particularly attractive to B2B marketers based on its expected demographics and as place where brands can appear to be culturally relevant as well as smart.
What’s happening? Is the Colbert Nation to understand that CBS Colbert just has love and puppies in his heart for politicians?
Wednesday night’s episode welcomed guests Scarlett Johansson, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Kendrick Lamar, the latter of whom thanked Colbert on the Late Show’s Instagram.
McCall, author of Viewer Discretion Advised: Taking Control of Mass Media Influences, adds, “If he tried to do a Carson or Leno type show, Colbert’s devotees would abandon him as a sellout”.
But that was the least of their problems.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert got off to a roaring start in the ratings with 6.55 million viewers on Tuesday night (September 8).

Fallon’s “Tonight Show” was enhanced by guest Justin Timberlake, who joined with Fallon for a “History of Rap” performance that went viral even before “Tonight Show” aired on Wednesday. “And if we don’t, it’ll still be an interesting story at theater camp I’ll be running in Idaho”. It was surprising that Colbert and the Florida governor talked mostly about softball and made a joke about Trump’s hair, the part of the show which barely got aired.
