In an update released at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Cal Fire estimated that the fire had burned 4,000 acres, more than doubling in acreage burned overnight. Those figures represent a growth of about 100 acres and a containment increase of 5 percent over Wednesday.
“Last night, there were predictions for a delta breeze to come up, but it didn’t materialize, so the fire didn’t progress as much as we thought it would”, McLean said. Aircraft and ground resources concentrated on the north end of the fire while working to hold fire lines along and off of the Hwy 128 corridor.
“We still have a long, long way to go”, Pittman said. It started around 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Cal Fire says a total of 700 personnel are fighting the blaze.
An 8-mile stretch of Highway 128 was closed from Markley Cove Resort on Lake Berryessa to Pleasants Valley Road.
The Cold Fire raging west of the Yolo County town of Winters grew overnight even while firefighters continued to make strides to contain the blaze, according to Cal Fire officials. Most of the firefight was taking place on the ground in terrain that was hard to access, Cal Fire said.
Along with Cal Fire, the Napa County, Winters, Dixon and Vacaville fire departments are on the fire lines. Sheriff’s deputies from Napa, Solano and Yolo counties as well as the California Highway Patrol are assisting.
The fire is called the Cold fire because of the nearby Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve. Firefighters from other parts of the state and possibly OR and Nevada are expected to assist, he said. “But we are looking at strong winds coming up this afternoon”.
“That is going to be a problem for us”, Pittman said.
