Weather Service meteorologist Mark Fox said temperatures are 8 to 10 degrees higher than normal, resulting in an increased fire risk.

Temperatures were expected to be in the mid to upper 70s near county beaches Thursday. A maximum temperature of 85 in Ramona was 2 degrees over the previous record, set in 1988, and a prior record of 82 in Alpine, set in 1991, was topped by 1 degree.

Friday will be cloudy and blustery through mid morning then gradual clearing, with a high near 22 degrees.

Tuesday’s high was 26 degrees – 17 degrees below normal – with wind gusts of 25 to 30 miles per hour.

A blast of Arctic air will move into the midstate on Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to forecasters with AccuWeather and the National Weather Service in State College.

But that’s exactly the red-flag wording used by the National Weather Service this week as seasonal temperatures climbed to record levels in Southern California.

More seasonable conditions and a slight chance of rain are expected by Wednesday of next week. Temperatures will continue to be considerably above average into early next week, probably the highest in the nation, according to forecasters.
