Coldplay to play Super Bowl halftime

After a lot of talk about contenders like Maroon 5 and Adele as performers during the halftime show at Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, the first official act has been confirmed: Avant-garde hard rock band Coldplay.

“We’re so excited and honoured and thrilled”, says frontman Chris Martin in a video published to YouTube by Super Bowl sponsors Pepsi, which promises to introduce a series of behind-the-scenes videos about the staging of the show.

“It’s going to be wonderful and I hope we see you there”, he added.

The band put on a show that was packed full of their classic hits as well as tracks from their latest record, A Head Full Of Dreams, at the St John at Hackney Church in east London on Thursday night.

Last year’s Super Bowl halftime show, which featured Katy Perry and her scene-stealing sidekick Left Shark, is going to be tough to beat.

Coldplay will head line this year’s half-time show during the Super Bowl. The “Uptown Funk” singer headlined 2014’s music spectacle with special guests Red Hot Chili Peppers, and is well known for collaborations with artists like B.o.B. Recent halftime headliners have included Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Beyoncé.

In the NFL’s announcement, the league said that “other special acts” will be involved, so this tradition will most likely be followed – perhaps the NFL will bring in newer performers like Taylor Swift or Pharrell Williams alongside Coldplay to attempt to appeal to multiple demographics, something that’s crucial during the massive Super Bowl event.

There were however, some Coldplay fans who received the news well.

Super Bowl 50 will take place at Levi’s Stadium in California on Sunday, February 7th.

The show is reportedly based on the NFL’s On the Fifty campaign. The band will not be paid for their performance at the football event, but the organizers will bear their production and travel costs.
