Meanwhile Dublin director Lenny Abrahamson’s much praised Room is nominated for Best global Independent Film, which is also distributed by Element Pictures and is due for release in Ireland on January 16th 2016.
Close behind were 45 Years and Macbeth, each of which received six nominations.
The film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is set in a future where single people are turned into animals if they fail to find a partner.
Both Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay received acting nominations for their lead roles 45 Years, while Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender were similarly recognised for Macbeth.
Other nominees for British Independent Film include Amy, the Amy Winehouse documentary, Ex Machina and 45 Years, and competitors for Best worldwide Independent Film include Cate Blanchett’s romance drama Carol, Room, Girlhood, Son of Saul and Force Majeure.
Completing the line up for the latter category is Alex Garland’s Ex Machina – also nominated for best director, screenplay, design production and visual effects.
Winners will be named on December 6 at Old Billingsgate, where Kate Winslet will receive her previously announced Variety Award.
Alicia Vikander is nominated for best actress for The Danish Girl, while Tom Hardy is nominated for best actor for his performance as both Kray twins in Legend.
Up for best supporting actress are Helena Bonham Carter and Anne-Marie Duff for Suffragette, Sienna Miller for High-Rise, and Julie Walters for Brooklyn.
