Colin Kaepernick was unable to play in the San Francisco 49ers’ first game of the preseason, leading many to believe Blaine Gabbert is going to run away with the starting quarterback job.

The San Francisco 49ers are starting their joint practice with the Denver Broncos, and while Colin Kaepernick is dressed and in pads, he is not throwing the football with the other quarterbacks.

Osweiler, who signed a $72 million, four-year contract in the offseason, went 4 for 7 for 27 yards. He was signed as an emergency backup for the Broncos last November but was released two weeks later without ever seeing any game action. Gabbert had a 95.0 passer rating, totaling 63 passing yards to go with three scrambles for 18 yards in three series. “It wouldn’t have been fair to put him in and then judge him on that in the competition”.

The guy who plays is nearly always ahead of the guy who doesn’t, especially when coach Chip Kelly has said the exhibition season will be the largest determining factor. Driskel led the way with 61 yards, which included a 22 yard scamper.
