Colin Kaepernick placed on injured reserve, Dylan Thompson promoted to 49ers

Former SC quarterback Dylan Thompson was promoted from the practice squad and will be Blaine Gabbert’s backup in Seattle Sunday.

The team announced on Saturday that Kaepernick has been placed on injured reserve, which means he’ll miss the rest of the season. Barrows added a second opinion on Kaepernick’s injury found a “significant tear” in his labrum. Rehabilitation for such a procedure is likely four to six months. The only way that Kaepernick’s 2016 salary becomes guaranteed is if he’s injured on April 1.

It’s a stunning end for Kaepernick, who just a couple years ago was widely regarded as not just a franchise quarterback but perhaps a player who could redefine the quarterback position in the NFL. I would assume Kaepernick’s shoulder injury will be plenty fine by that point, and he will be traded or released before then. Kaepernick, according to Schefter, has elected to have surgery on his shoulder, ending any chance of the benched quarterback from being able to return to the starting lineup. The 49ers ended up winning the game 17-16.

Thompson, undrafted out of SC, completed 60 percent of his passes (24-of-40) for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the exhibition season.
