Due to the year-to-year nature of his contract, and knowing the 49ers must decide to keep him around or not by April 1, teams may want to wait out the process to see if San Francisco cuts Kaepernick, thereby allowing teams to sign him, as opposed to giving up assets in a trade.

While Kaepernick has been rehabilitating the past month in Vail, Colorado – where he underwent surgery at The Steadman Clinic – Baalke said he is unsure how Gabbert has been spending the offseason, though he expressed confidence that Gabbert was preparing for what also will be his sixth National Football League season.
“He’s not game ready yet, by any stretch, but all indications are that it’s healing very nicely and I look forward to having him at full speed as soon as possible”, Baalke said. I was really, really impressed with him there, and obviously I know Urban (Meyer) really well and know how high he thinks of him. Have they been talking up their attachment to Kaepernick publicly as leverage for trade talks that they suspected were coming? He s got a really good personality.
That injury resulted in surgery, but it was not performed by the 49ers medical staff, nor were those on his thumb and knee last month. You know what I mean?
